It's a very low-growing plant and is sprouting out of a shady bank in our field. I want to put a name to it, but can't think what it might be.

A spurge! (Don't you just love that word?!)
Hmmm... could be, though it's brighter coloured and the leaves are thicker than the ones pictured in those links.
Will look through some more spurges(!) though and see if I can find it.
